Clemson posted a 31-0 win between the teams in the 2016 CFP Playoff Semifinal at the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl and has gone 42-2 since – and including – that win. This marks the fourth matchup between the Buckeyes and Tigers, all in bowl contests, with Clemson winning all three games.
"The PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl has a well-earned reputation of providing some of college football's most memorable moments, and this game will be one of the most anticipated college football games this year," said Fiesta Bowl Executive Director
Mike Nealy. "It's special to have the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl host teams we know so well and ultimately decide who plays for the national championship."
No stranger to the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl, second-ranked Ohio State is making its ninth Fiesta Bowl appearance, the most by any team, and third in the last five years. The 5-3 record at the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl is the school's highest winning percentage of any Bowl it has played more than twice. The Buckeyes were dominant this season with a 13-0 record, while also capturing their 38th Big Ten title with a 34-21 win over Wisconsin.
Sophomore quarterback and Davey O'Brien Award finalist Justin Fields ranks third nationally with 50 touchdowns and is fourth in passing efficiency at 190.3. A Doak Walker Award finalist, junior running back J.K. Dobbins ranks third nationally with 1,829 rushing yards and rushed for a touchdown in eight straight games, the longest streak in the Big Ten this year. Dobbins also has passed former Buckeye and 2016 PlayStation ® Fiesta Bowl participant Ezekiel Elliott for second all-time in rushing at Ohio State with 4,285 yards.
On the defensive side, junior edge Chase Young ranks first nationally with 21 tackles for loss and 16.5 sacks – a new Ohio State record. One of the most balanced teams in college football, the Buckeyes rank in the top-five nationally for both total defense (first) and offense (fifth). Ohio State also has one of the most efficient offenses, leading the nation in scoring offense with 86 touchdowns, while LSU is close behind with 80 touchdowns.
Under first-year head coach Ryan Day, the Buckeyes recorded their 11th undefeated season and own a 19-game winning streak, dating back to last season, second-longest in FBS behind Clemson. Day is the school's fourth head coach to lead Ohio State to the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl.
Owning the nation's longest winning streak at 28-straight games, third-ranked Clemson finished the regular season 13-0 overall and 8-0 in the ACC. The Tigers have recorded a seven-game streak of 30-point wins to tie the longest streak in the AP Poll era (since 1936), matching Houston in 2011 and Michigan in 1976.
This season, junior running back Travis Etienne broke the ACC record for career rushing touchdowns (53), while sophomore quarterback sensation Trevor Lawrence has thrown for at least one touchdown pass in 22 consecutive games, the nation's longest active streak.
This will be Clemson's second-ever PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl appearance. The first came in 2016 when the Tigers shut out Ohio State, 31-0, en route to winning the College Football Playoff national title. Starting from – and including – that win over the Buckeyes, Clemson has a 42-2 record.
Cementing his name as one the greats in college football history, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has been at the helm for 12 years and holds a 128-30 head coaching record. He has guided the Tigers to two national championships in the last three years, secured seven berths to New Year's Six Bowls (including three CFP Semifinals), and dominated the ACC with five consecutive conference titles.
"It is a great honor to host two of the most prolific teams in college football," said
Patrick Barkley, Chairman of the Fiesta Bowl Board of Directors. "We very much enjoyed these coaches, student-athletes and fan bases over the last few years and we look forward to once again showing them all that Arizona has to offer, including the Fiesta Bowl hospitality that we are known for."
The winner of the PlayStation® Fiesta Bowl will advance to the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday, January 13, 2020, in New Orleans.
