Biography

Derek Anderson wanted to end his Oregon State career on a high note. He did that and then some in leading the Beavers to a 38-21 win over Notre Dame in the 16th Annual Insight Bowl at Bank One Ballpark.

The 6-foot, 6-inch quarterback tied a bowl record with four touchdown passes and completed 28-of-45 passes for 358 yards and no interceptions. He connected with eight different receivers and was responsible for all but 20 yards of the Beavers' entire offensive output.

The Fighting Irish cut the lead to 24-14 late in the third quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Darius Walker. But Anderson led the Beavers on a 90-yard, 12-play drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown pass to Joe Newton that sealed the win.

The game was a rematch of the 2001 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, which Oregon State won,  41-9, and was similar to that BCS game with the Beavers dominating on offense with touchdown drives of 27, 10 and 45 yards to take an early 21-0 lead. Sammie Stroughter had a 52-yard punt return and Derrick Doggett blocked a punt to help Oregon State to the short field position.

Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Fasano to cut the lead to 21-7 with 56 seconds left in the first half and added an 18-yard touchdown pass to Rhema McKnight that made it 31-21 with 4:52 left.

The Irish tried an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, but the Beavers recovered on the Notre Dame 28 and put the game away on Dwight Wright's 3-yard touchdown run.

Oregon State began the season 1-4, but rallied to win six of its final seven contests to finish 7-5.

Anderson, who was unanimously named Offensive Player of the Game, finished No. 2 on the Pac-10 career yards passing list with 11,249, trailing only USC's Carson Palmer (11,818).
