Phoenix – For many students, the past year of educational transitions has been difficult. Some have struggled, some have fallen behind, while others have simply disappeared from the rolls.
There is, however, work in place to help re-engage students in the Grand Canyon State. The Governor's Office of Education has committed funds through a partnership with Graduation Alliance, an organization known nationwide for providing academic and social-emotional support for at-risk learners. The Fiesta Bowl Organization, an Arizona nonprofit that has honored, celebrated and supported educators in its 50-year history is helping spread the word.
This targeted effort will focus on Arizona students who, for any number of reasons, are struggling with the difficulties of the pandemic, are chronically absent, or have completely disengaged from school.
The Graduation Alliance partnership, known as ENGAGE Arizona, is available to students who are struggling or disengaged, providing each with an academic coach to work with them on a plan to get back on track for summer learning and for the Fall of 2021 school year.
"We are excited to be partnering with Governor Ducey's office, to bring robust, human support to struggling students and families. The past year has been difficult for families, students and school districts, forced to operate in a space devoid of traditional structure," Ron Klausner, CEO of Graduation Alliance said. "The ENGAGE Arizona program will be hyper-focused on helping students get back on track, through the use of proven techniques and dedicated Academic Coaches."
The Fiesta Bowl Organization engages with teachers and educators year-round as part of its mission to enhance organizations that contribute to the success of their communities through youth, sports and education. By utilizing its statewide network, The Fiesta Bowl Organization will help ENGAGE Arizona reach as many students as possible.
All school districts in Arizona are encouraged to "opt in" as soon as possible, to maximize the opportunity for successful intervention. Although the program is most effective when implemented at the district level, there is some provision for individual participation. Parents may also contact their school district, or Graduation Alliance (graduationalliance.com - 855.486.8855) to inquire about participation in the program.
